SAN FRANCISCO — South Bay and southern East Bay riders heading into San Francisco this weekend will need to build a bus transfer into their BART trip.
BART says there will be no train service between Union City and Warm Springs/South Fremont on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26–27 while crews replace an interlocking near Fremont Station. Free AC Transit buses will bridge the closed segment, and BART is telling riders to expect 30–40 minutes of added travel time.
The work also shuts down the Green Line for the entire weekend.
What part of BART is closed Sept. 26–27?
Trains will not operate between Union City and Warm Springs/South Fremont.
The free bus bridge will provide two patterns: direct service between Union City and Warm Springs/South Fremont, plus “hopper” buses that also stop at Fremont Station. Fremont Station will remain open for buses but will have no train service.
South of the closure, an Orange Line train will continue making loops between Warm Springs/South Fremont and Berryessa/North San Jose.
Will the Green Line run this weekend?
No. BART says the Green Line will not operate Sept. 26–27.
That matters for riders accustomed to a one-seat Green Line trip between Berryessa/North San Jose and Daly City. The weekend trip will require a different combination of rail and the bus bridge.
How do South Bay riders get to San Francisco?
BART's specific instruction for riders coming through the bus bridge and continuing to San Francisco is to ride the Orange Line and transfer at Bay Fair to a Blue Line train toward Daly City.
The Blue, Red and Yellow lines are scheduled to run at their normal 20-minute weekend intervals. Orange Line trains are also scheduled every 20 minutes, but the bus bridge interrupts the through trip.
Because bus travel and station transfers are less predictable than a normal train connection, the 30–40 minute estimate should be treated as planning time, not a guaranteed maximum.
What happens at Fremont Station?
Fremont will function as a bus stop during the shutdown rather than a rail stop. BART says the station will be open, but no trains will serve it.
Riders who normally start or end their trip there should follow bus-bridge signs and staff instructions rather than waiting on the train platform for normal service.
Are late-night South Bay trains changing too?
Yes. BART says northbound departure times from Berryessa/North San Jose will shift, and the final two evening trips normally scheduled for 11:38 p.m. and 11:49 p.m. will not run. Riders are directed to use the 11:10 p.m. departure instead.
BART has loaded the work-weekend schedule into its Trip Planner, so riders with a specific origin and destination should check the planner again shortly before traveling.
Why this shutdown matters for San Francisco this weekend
The closure lands on one of San Francisco's busiest event weekends of the month.
Portola Music Festival runs at Pier 80 on both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday also brings the Folsom Street Fair and Giants-Dodgers at Oracle Park, creating overlapping demand on regional transit.
