SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco International Airport says Runway 1 Right should reopen no later than Tuesday, Sept. 29, ending a six-month construction closure earlier than previously expected.
For travelers, the practical question is whether reopening the runway means SFO’s recent flight delays will ease. It should remove one capacity constraint, but the airport is also operating under FAA arrival-spacing procedures that are separate from the construction project.
When is SFO Runway 1R expected to reopen?
SFO announced Sept. 16 that the repaving project was ahead of schedule and that Runway 1R is expected to reopen no later than Sept. 29.
The runway closed March 30 for repaving, improvements to adjacent taxiways, lighting upgrades and new striping and markings.
Why did the runway closure contribute to delays?
SFO said before the closure that losing Runway 1R was expected to reduce the airport’s maximum arrival capacity from 54 flights an hour to 45.
At a busy airport, that reduction matters most when scheduled arrivals bunch together. A flight can be delayed even when the weather in San Francisco looks clear if the airport cannot accept arriving aircraft as quickly as airlines scheduled them.
Will SFO delays improve as soon as the runway reopens?
Some improvement is plausible, but reopening does not guarantee an immediate return to normal. The construction closure is only one part of the airport’s current capacity problem.
SFO’s current travel alert says the FAA increased spacing between arriving aircraft. The airport says the combination of those FAA procedures and runway construction has been expected to cause delays of at least 30 minutes on roughly 30% of arriving flights.
Once Runway 1R is available again, the construction component of that constraint should ease. The separate FAA spacing rules can still limit how many aircraft can arrive in a given period.
Why do two SFO pages show different reopening dates?
As of Sept. 27, SFO’s public pages are not fully synchronized. The newer Sept. 16 airport press release says Runway 1R will reopen no later than Sept. 29, while the SFO Aircraft Noise Office page still describes Runways 1L and 1R as closed through Oct. 2 and reopening Oct. 3.
Because the Sept. 16 release specifically announced that the project was ahead of schedule, SF News Today is treating Sept. 29 as the airport’s latest announced target while flagging the older date still visible elsewhere on SFO’s site.
What can still cause delays after the construction ends?
Runway availability is only part of the system. Weather, wind direction, aircraft spacing and traffic volume can all affect how many flights SFO can handle. The FAA makes operational runway and separation decisions.
SFO’s noise office notes that adverse weather can reduce arrival rates sharply even when all runways are available. Fleet Week in October can also change normal air traffic patterns.
What should passengers do on Sept. 29 and after?
Do not assume a scheduled flight will be on time simply because the runway is expected to reopen. SFO advises passengers to check directly with their airline for the status of a specific flight.
