Weekend mobility at a glanceUS-101 closes southbound Friday 11 p.m.–Monday 6 a.m. Saturday brings several event-related Muni reroutes; Sunday adds Sunday Streets, Diplo’s 5K and no BART Green Line service.

SAN FRANCISCO — Drivers and transit riders have several separate reasons to plan ahead this weekend, with a full southbound US-101 shutdown overlapping street festivals, Muni reroutes, Sunday Streets and a significant Sunday BART service change.

The biggest disruption starts at 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, when every southbound lane of US-101 at Hospital Curve closes between Cesar Chavez Street and 17th Street. One northbound lane will also close. Caltrans expects the configuration to remain in place until 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19 and recommends southbound I-280 as the main freeway alternative.

What closes Friday night?

Hayes Street between Gough and Octavia closes Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. for the Hayes Valley Farmers Market and Shared Spaces program. The outbound 6 Hayes/Parnassus reroutes via Franklin, Grove and Webster.

At 11 p.m., the larger freeway disruption begins. For the detailed ramp and connector plan, see SF News Today’s US-101 Hospital Curve closure guide.

Which Saturday events affect streets or Muni?

Several unrelated events overlap Saturday. These detailed SF News Today guides contain the exact closure footprints and route changes:

Hayes Street also closes again Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

What changes Sunday?

US-101 remains closed through Sunday. In Golden Gate Park, Diplo’s Run Club 5K reroutes the 44 O’Shaughnessy from 8 to 11 a.m., bypassing the Music Concourse stops near the California Academy of Sciences and de Young.

Farther south, Sunday Streets Excelsior makes Mission Street between Geneva Avenue and Theresa Street, plus Ocean Avenue between Persia and Mission, car-free for the event. Organizers list the public event window as 11 a.m.–4 p.m., with vehicle restrictions beginning earlier.

Is the BART Green Line running Sunday?

No. BART says there will be no Green Line service all day Sunday, Oct. 18. Single tracking between San Leandro and Bay Fair is also expected to produce 25–30-minute delays until 6 p.m. See the SF News Today BART service guide for the transfer plan.

When should US-101 reopen?

Caltrans currently lists 6 a.m. Monday as the expected end of the Hospital Curve closure. The work is weather dependent, so drivers should verify the freeway status before the morning commute rather than assume the schedule cannot change.

The practical takeaway is that there is no single citywide shutdown. Southbound US-101 is the largest regional impact; SoMa, Potrero Hill and 24th Street have the heaviest Saturday event closures; the Excelsior and Golden Gate Park have Sunday impacts; and BART’s Green Line is out all day Sunday.
