SAN FRANCISCO — Labor Day gives a lot of San Francisco workers a Monday off. It does not give the city’s parking meters the day off.
On Monday, Sept. 7, San Francisco will continue enforcing all parking meters, including color-capped meters and Pay-or-Permit meters, according to SFMTA. White zones, overnight street sweeping and ordinary safety restrictions also remain enforceable. SFMTA holiday enforcement schedule.
Are San Francisco parking meters free on Labor Day?
No. If the meter normally requires payment on a Monday during the hours you are parked, assume you need to pay it. Labor Day is not one of the holidays when San Francisco suspends meter enforcement.
What parking rules are not enforced?
SFMTA says it will not enforce time limits in Residential Parking Permit zones, general parking time limits, weekday daytime street sweeping from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., commuter-shuttle towaway zones, or unmetered yellow and green zones on Labor Day.
Is street sweeping suspended on Labor Day?
Only the daytime portion. Nightly street sweeping between midnight and 6 a.m. remains enforced. A daytime Monday cleaning period is suspended; an overnight restriction can still produce a ticket. Read the posted sign on your block.
Red zones and other safety rules still count
A holiday does not make a red curb legal. No-stopping and no-parking areas, red zones, blue zones and white zones continue to be enforced.
How will Muni run on Labor Day?
Muni will operate a weekend schedule using Sunday operators on Monday, Sept. 7. Several weekday-only routes will not run, including the 1X, 5R, 8AX, 8BX, 9R, 28R and 714. The Muni Metro subway is scheduled to open at 8 a.m., with Early Morning Metro buses before then.
What about BART on Labor Day?
BART says it will run a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m. until midnight. All five lines are scheduled for roughly 20-minute frequencies until 9 p.m. BART parking will be free at most stations, except Milpitas and Berryessa/North San Jose, whose parking is operated by VTA.
That creates an odd but useful distinction: parking at a San Francisco street meter is not free just because it is Labor Day. Parking at most BART stations is.
What should drivers remember before the long weekend?
Three rules cover most of the confusion: pay the meter; ordinary Monday daytime street cleaning is generally suspended; and check a holiday transit timetable rather than a normal Monday one.
There is one more complication for anyone arriving from SFO, the Peninsula or South Bay: Caltrans plans to close northbound Highway 101 through Hospital Curve for almost the entire weekend.
