No — San Francisco parking meters are not free on Labor Day. SFMTA says meters remain enforced Monday, Sept. 7, even while several other daytime curb rules are suspended.
On Monday, Sept. 7, Muni, BART and Caltrain are all operating, but on holiday or weekend-style schedules. At the curb, San Francisco continues enforcing parking meters and several other restrictions even while suspending some daytime parking programs.
There is also a separate fare-payment change arriving less than a week before the holiday: beginning Sept. 1, MuniMobile stops selling new single-ride tickets.
Is Muni running on Labor Day?
Yes. SFMTA’s 2026 holiday calendar lists Labor Day as a Weekend Schedule (Sunday Operators) day.
Most riders will still have service, but frequencies and route patterns can differ from a normal Monday. The routes with no service are the weekday-only 1X, 5R, 8AX, 8BX, 9R, 28R and 714. Supplemental School Day Service also does not operate.
Muni Metro opens at 8 a.m.
The Muni Metro subway is scheduled to open at 8 a.m. SFMTA says Early Morning Metro buses operate from 5 to 8 a.m., covering the period before the subway opens.
That matters most to early-shift workers, airport travelers making downtown connections and riders who normally treat Monday morning as a standard weekday.
MuniMobile changes on Sept. 1
Beginning Sept. 1, MuniMobile will no longer sell new single-ride fares. SFMTA says riders can instead use Clipper, tap a chip-enabled debit or credit card on a fare reader for an adult fare, pay cash, or use a Metro station ticket machine.
Single rides bought in MuniMobile before Sept. 1 remain valid for 30 days. Day passes, cable-car tickets, Lifeline passes and Visitor Passports remain available in the app for now. SFMTA expects the standalone MuniMobile app to be fully retired by mid-2027.
For a daily rider, that may already be familiar. For a visitor opening the app on Labor Day and expecting to buy one ride, it may not be.
What is BART doing on Labor Day?
BART says it will run a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m. to midnight. Five-line service is scheduled until 9 p.m. at roughly 20-minute frequencies, followed by three-line service after 9 p.m.
BART parking is free at its stations on Labor Day except Milpitas and Berryessa/North San Jose, where the lots are operated by VTA. Riders should use BART’s Trip Planner for a specific itinerary rather than relying on a normal Monday departure time.
What about Caltrain?
Caltrain’s holiday calendar lists Labor Day as Weekend Schedule service. That makes the weekend timetable the relevant one for Peninsula and South Bay riders travelling to San Francisco on Monday.
The schedule is particularly useful for people headed toward Mission Bay or Oracle Park because Caltrain terminates at 4th & King, within walking and Muni-connection distance of the ballpark.
Are San Francisco parking meters free on Labor Day?
No. This is probably the easiest Labor Day parking mistake to make.
SFMTA says all parking meters remain enforced Monday, including color-capped meters and Pay or Permit spaces. White zones and nightly street sweeping between midnight and 6 a.m. are also enforced.
Safety restrictions never take the holiday off: red zones, blue zones, no-stopping and no-parking rules remain enforceable.
Which parking rules are not enforced?
SFMTA says several other programs are suspended for Labor Day:
- time-limited Residential Parking Permit zones;
- general parking time limits;
- weekday daytime street sweeping from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.;
- commuter-shuttle towaway zones; and
- unmetered yellow and green zones.
Drivers should still read the sign at the exact space. Holiday enforcement rules do not override every location-specific restriction.
Is street sweeping suspended on Labor Day?
Only the daytime portion. Weekday daytime street sweeping between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. is not enforced, but nightly sweeping from midnight to 6 a.m. remains enforced.
So a Monday morning daytime cleaning sign may be suspended while an overnight restriction on the same block can still matter.
Oracle Park creates a special-event parking exception
The Giants host the St. Louis Cardinals at Oracle Park on Labor Day. SFMTA’s current special-event parking schedule lists Oracle Park event-rate hours from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 7.
That means a driver who assumes holiday parking will be relaxed can encounter exactly the opposite around Mission Bay and China Basin: heavy demand plus special-event meter pricing.
Does the US-101 closure affect Monday?
The major northbound US-101 closure through Hospital Curve is scheduled to end by 6 a.m. Monday. If Caltrans reopens on schedule, it should not overlap the Monday afternoon Giants game or most daytime Labor Day trips.
It matters much more for Friday night, Saturday and Sunday travel into San Francisco from the Peninsula. Anyone returning Sunday should read our US-101 closure and detour guide.
