Head West at a glanceSunday, Sept. 13 · marketplace 11 a.m.–5 p.m. · Hayes Street at Patricia’s Green · publicly listed as free to attend · street closures begin at 6 a.m. · outbound 6 Hayes/Parnassus rerouted 5 a.m.–7 p.m.

SAN FRANCISCO — Head West returns to Hayes Valley on Sunday with an outdoor marketplace of makers, artists, designers and vintage sellers. The event itself runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the transportation impact lasts much longer: SFMTA says street closures begin at 6 a.m. and the outbound 6 Hayes/Parnassus is rerouted from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m.

That makes this more than a simple “what’s on Sunday” listing. If you are visiting Patricia’s Green, driving through Hayes Valley or using the 6, the useful details begin before the first vendor opens.

When and where is Head West in Hayes Valley?

HEAD WEST’s official Hayes Valley page lists the marketplace for Sunday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Hayes Street at Patricia’s Green.

The organizer describes the Hayes Valley edition as an outdoor marketplace and says the event goes ahead in light rain. It also recommends walking, biking, rideshare or public transit because street parking is limited.

Is Head West free?

Public event listings describe the Hayes Valley marketplace as free to attend. The organizer’s Hayes Valley page does not present a general-admission ticket requirement.

Individual vendors sell their own goods, of course, so “free” here means there is no listed admission charge to enter and browse the market.

What will be at the marketplace?

HEAD WEST describes its markets as gatherings of independent makers, artists, designers, small brands and vintage merchants. The exact seller mix rotates from market to market, so readers looking for a particular vendor should use the organizer’s current event page rather than assume an older roster is unchanged.

Organizer material for the Hayes Valley market describes a typical footprint of roughly 75 to 100 booths and estimated foot traffic of about 3,000 to 5,000 people. Those are organizer estimates, not an official attendance count for Sept. 13.

Which Hayes Valley streets are closed Sunday?

SFMTA’s event notice lists closures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on:

  • Hayes Street between Gough and Octavia streets;
  • Linden Street between Gough and Octavia streets;
  • Octavia Street between Hayes and Fell streets; and
  • the Linden Street/Octavia Street intersection.

The closures begin five hours before the marketplace opens and remain in place two hours after it ends, giving crews time to set up and remove the street market.

How is the 6 Hayes/Parnassus rerouted?

The outbound 6 Hayes/Parnassus will be rerouted from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to SFMTA. The detour uses Franklin, Grove and Webster before returning to Hayes.

Inbound service is not listed in the event notice as following the same detour, so riders should pay attention to direction when checking their stop.

Which Muni stops will be skipped?

SFMTA says outbound 6 service will miss these Hayes Street stops during the event:

  • Hayes and Gough;
  • Hayes and Laguna; and
  • Hayes and Buchanan.

The agency points riders to alternate service at Hayes/Van Ness, Grove/Gough, Grove/Laguna and Hayes/Webster.

Should you drive or take transit?

For the market itself, transit, walking or biking is the simpler plan. HEAD WEST warns that street parking is limited even on a normal market day, and the event removes additional curb space and closes several blocks.

If you are driving through Hayes Valley rather than attending, expect the Hayes/Octavia area to be the pinch point and give yourself extra time for local detours.

What happens if it rains?

The organizer says the marketplace is light rain or shine. Severe weather can still force changes, so it is sensible to check the organizer’s page Sunday morning if conditions deteriorate.
