SAN FRANCISCO — A free waterfront event at Pier 33 this Saturday comes with an unusually valuable optional extra: a complimentary sightseeing cruise on San Francisco Bay.
Alcatraz City Cruises is holding its 20th Anniversary Community Day by the Bay on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing. The pier event itself is free and requires no ticket or RSVP.
Afterward, the operator is offering limited $0 Bay Discovery Cruise departures. Those cruises require advance reservations and do not dock at Alcatraz Island.
What is free at Alcatraz Community Day?
The Community Day takes place on the waterfront at Pier 33 rather than on Alcatraz Island.
Alcatraz City Cruises lists free face painting, a live DJ, a 20th-anniversary tote-bag decorating activity, a roaming photo booth and a passport-stamp challenge. Community organizations are also scheduled to host hands-on activities.
You can attend that portion from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. without registering.
How does the free Bay cruise work?
The optional Bay Discovery Cruise is a separate, capacity-limited offering after Community Day.
The organizer's Community Day page lists complimentary departures at 3:10 p.m. and 3:25 p.m. and limits bookings to four guests. Its dedicated ticket page currently lists the cruise at $0, including fees and taxes, with a 3:10 p.m. departure and a “Check Availability” booking action.
Because the public page does not expose a live seat count, SF News Today is not describing reservations as available or sold out. The accurate status is: space is limited and reservations are subject to availability.
Does the free cruise go to Alcatraz Island?
No. This is the easiest detail to misunderstand.
The 90-minute Bay Discovery Cruise is a sightseeing trip with views of Alcatraz Island, the San Francisco skyline and other Bay landmarks, but the operator explicitly says the vessel does not dock at Alcatraz.
The free Community Day also does not include a normal Alcatraz Island tour. Anyone who wants to disembark on the island needs a separate Alcatraz tour ticket.
When should cruise passengers arrive?
The official cruise page tells passengers to arrive at Pier 33 at least 45 minutes before departure.
That means a 3:10 p.m. reservation requires being at the landing by about 2:25 p.m. — before Community Day formally ends at 2:30 p.m. Anyone combining the two should not wait until the event is over to head to the boarding area.
Where is Community Day?
The event is at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing on the Embarcadero, the regular departure point for official Alcatraz City Cruises service.
The operator says the ticket booth, waiting areas and boarding areas at Pier 33 are accessible, as are restrooms at the landing and aboard its vessels. It also notes that wheelchairs are not available to borrow at the pier.
Do you need a reservation if you only want the free pier event?
No. The distinction is straightforward:
- Community Day at Pier 33: free; no ticket or RSVP required.
- Complimentary Bay Discovery Cruise: free, but a limited advance reservation is required.
- Alcatraz Island visit: not included in either free offering.
