SAN FRANCISCO — Bhangra & Beats returns Friday, Nov. 13 for a free Diwali edition that will spread across Yerba Buena Gardens, Jessie Square and Yerba Buena Lane in downtown San Francisco.
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival lists the event from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and describes it as a family-friendly celebration mixing Punjabi music and dance with a night-market atmosphere.
What is at Bhangra & Beats?
The official program calls for interactive dance lessons, live dhol drumming, DJs, performances and an open dance floor, alongside food vendors, local makers, community activations and family activities.
The Nov. 13 edition is being presented as San Francisco’s official Diwali celebration and is the second Bhangra & Beats date at the Yerba Buena complex this year.
Where is the night market?
The main venue is the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens, on Mission Street between Third and Fourth streets. Programming also extends into Jessie Square and Yerba Buena Lane.
Is Bhangra & Beats free?
Yes. The organizer describes the event as free and all ages. Food, drinks and retail purchases from vendors are separate.
What should you expect?
This is not a seated concert with one stage and one start time. It is an open-air cultural night market with performances, dance participation, food and shopping spread through several connected downtown public spaces.
That layout means the useful arrival point depends on what you want to see. The Great Lawn is the clearest anchor, while Jessie Square and Yerba Buena Lane are part of the same event footprint.
Getting there
Yerba Buena Gardens sits between downtown transit hubs. Visitors can walk from Powell Street BART/Muni or Montgomery Street BART/Muni; multiple Muni routes also serve Market, Mission and Third streets. Driving into the event area means using paid downtown garages rather than an event-specific free lot.
