SAN FRANCISCO — BART riders traveling between the South Bay, Fremont and San Francisco need a different plan this weekend. The Green Line will not run at all Sept. 12–13, and BART will replace train service between Union City, Fremont and Warm Springs/South Fremont with free buses while crews perform scheduled track work.
This is a planned weekend shutdown. Riders may also remember Green Line changes earlier this week after a substation fire near Daly City; BART says that earlier disruption and this weekend’s scheduled work are separate issues.
Is the BART Green Line running Sept. 12–13?
No. BART’s official weekend notice says there will be no Green Line service between Daly City and Berryessa/North San José on the work days. The Green Line disappears from the operating pattern for the weekend while other lines continue running with changes around the work zone.
Passengers should check BART’s live service information before leaving because unrelated delays or changes can still occur on the day of travel.
Where does the BART bus bridge run?
Free AC Transit buses will replace trains between Union City, Fremont and Warm Springs/South Fremont. Riders traveling through that segment will leave the train, board the replacement bus, then return to rail service on the other side.
The practical effect is that a trip that normally stays on rail now includes a surface-bus transfer and extra waiting time.
How much extra time should riders allow?
BART says passengers traveling through the work zone should expect 30 to 40 minutes of additional travel time. That is an estimate for the planned work itself, not a guarantee that every trip will be exactly 30 or 40 minutes longer.
If you have an airport connection, appointment or event with a fixed start time, build in more margin than the minimum estimate.
How do South Bay riders get to San Francisco?
BART’s recommended path for riders coming north from the South Bay is to use the replacement bus through the closed segment, continue on the Orange Line, and then transfer at Bay Fair to a Blue Line train toward Daly City for San Francisco.
That Bay Fair transfer matters because the Green Line — the direct Berryessa/North San José-to-Daly City service many riders would normally use — is not operating this weekend.
What happens at Fremont Station?
Fremont remains part of the replacement-bus connection, but there is no train service through the Union City–Warm Springs/South Fremont work segment. Do not read “bus bridge” as a systemwide BART shutdown: trains continue operating elsewhere, while buses bridge the closed rail section.
Why is BART shutting the Green Line?
BART says the Sept. 12–13 closure is for scheduled track work that requires taking the Union City–Warm Springs/South Fremont segment out of train service. The agency announced the work in advance and built the free AC Transit bus bridge into the weekend plan.
Was this caused by the Daly City fire?
No. BART dealt with separate Green Line disruptions earlier in the week after a fire damaged electrical equipment near Daly City. The Sept. 12–13 shutdown was already scheduled as a track-work weekend.
That distinction is worth making because someone who saw Green Line alerts earlier this week could reasonably assume the weekend closure is an extension of the fire-related problem. It is not.
When is the next Green Line shutdown?
BART’s work schedule lists another similar shutdown for Sept. 26–27. Riders who use this corridor regularly should expect another weekend in which replacement buses and extra transfers may be required.
