SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Lowrider Council's Sept. 19 King of the Streets celebration combines a parade, more than 300 lowriders, a hopping competition and a 45th-anniversary art exhibit — while Mission Street closures reroute seven Muni lines.

What is the event schedule?

  • 11 a.m.–6 p.m.: 45th Anniversary Lowrider Art Exhibit at Mission Cultural Center, 2868 Mission St.
  • 12:30 p.m.: Bendición with Danza Azteca Xiuhcoatl at 24th & Mission.
  • 1–3 p.m.: Lowrider Parade on Mission Street between Cesar Chavez and 17th Street.
  • 2–8 p.m.: Car show with more than 300 lowriders.
  • 3–5 p.m.: King of the Streets hopping competition at 24th & Mission.

Who is the grand marshal?

The Lowrider Council has named playwright and director Luis Valdez grand marshal of its 45th-anniversary celebration.

Can you watch the parade on TV?

Yes. The Council says both the 1–3 p.m. parade and the 3–5 p.m. hopping competition will be broadcast live on CBS.

How much is the hopping competition prize?

The organizer is advertising a $10,000 cash purse for King of the Streets.

Where should spectators go?

For the blessing and hopping contest, aim for 24th & Mission. For the parade, the viewing corridor stretches along Mission Street between Cesar Chavez and 17th. The stationary car show lasts longest, from 2 to 8 p.m.

Which streets close?

SFMTA's event plan closes Mission Street between 18th and 26th and 24th Street between Capp and Valencia from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., with event activity extending beyond the core closure footprint.

Which Muni routes reroute?

The detailed SFMTA service instructions and the agency's weekly advisory identify the affected routes as the 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 27 Bryant, 33 Ashbury/18th Street, 48 Quintara/24th Street, 49 Van Ness/Mission and 67 Bernal Heights. Some detours continue as late as 10 p.m.

Which BART station should you use?

24th Street Mission is the obvious rail gateway for the hopping competition and activity around 24th Street. 16th Street Mission is closer to the northern end of the parade corridor.
