SAN FRANCISCO — Fleet Week visitors heading toward San Francisco’s shoreline this week have another factor to plan around besides aircraft, road closures and crowds: unusually high tides and hazardous surf.
The National Park Service has posted a caution for Golden Gate National Recreation Area beaches from Wednesday, Oct. 7 through Sunday, Oct. 11, citing high astronomical tides and thermal expansion.
NPS expects coastal flooding and beach hazards to be moderate Wednesday and Thursday, then minor Friday through Sunday. The agency warns that water and waves can reach farther inland than usual while strong rip currents and large breaking waves remain hazards along the coast.
Is San Francisco under a Coastal Flood Advisory?
Not for the entire Fleet Week weekend based on the current federal notices.
The important distinction is that the National Park Service has posted a beach and coastal-flooding caution for Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The current National Weather Service Coastal Flood Advisory is not a blanket San Francisco weekend advisory.
For people deciding whether to visit Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, Crissy Field or another waterfront area, the practical message is simpler: conditions near the water may be less forgiving than on an ordinary fall weekend.
When are San Francisco’s high tides?
NOAA tide predictions for San Francisco show the higher daytime tide building into the weekend. The astronomical high tide is near 5.96 feet around 11:22 a.m. Friday, 6.06 feet around 11:50 a.m. Saturday and 6.08 feet around 12:18 p.m. Sunday, measured relative to mean lower low water.
That puts some of the week’s highest tides around the middle of the day, when Fleet Week waterfront attendance will also be particularly heavy.
NPS’s Wednesday–Thursday “moderate” designation should not be read as a simple ranking of astronomical tide height. Actual coastal flooding and beach hazards also depend on observed water levels and ocean conditions, not just the predicted tide.
What are the actual beach hazards?
NPS warns that rough surf around Golden Gate National Recreation Area can include strong rip currents and large breaking waves capable of reaching unexpectedly far up a beach.
The park advises visitors to stay off jetties, piers and rocks during hazardous conditions and to remain out of dangerous surf. At Ocean Beach in particular, apparently dry sand is not necessarily beyond the reach of a larger wave.
What does this mean for Fleet Week?
The hazard period runs through the busiest Fleet Week days. The Fleet Week air show is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, while ship tours and other waterfront events will bring additional crowds.
Anyone watching from a beach or waterside area should leave more room than usual between themselves and the water and should not assume that yesterday’s high-water line marks the safe limit for the next tide.
