SAN FRANCISCO — The giant steel figure that has towered over Embarcadero Plaza since 2025 is about to disappear from the waterfront.
R-Evolution, artist Marco Cochrane’s 45-foot sculpture, will receive a free public farewell on Friday, Oct. 2 before crews dismantle it later in the month. The fixed date, unusual visual subject and short removal window make this one of those events where people may not realize they are seeing the work for the last time until it is already gone.
When is the R-Evolution farewell in San Francisco?
The event is Friday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Embarcadero Plaza. Big Art Loop describes it as free and all ages. RSVPs are encouraged but the event is not ticketed as a paid attraction.
The program is expected to begin with conversations about the sculpture and public art, followed by live music, performances, a global meditation and a closing DJ set by Opulent Temple.
Where is R-Evolution?
The sculpture stands in Embarcadero Plaza near Market and Steuart streets, across from the Ferry Building area. Big Art Loop says it was installed in April 2025 in partnership with San Francisco Recreation and Parks, the Sijbrandij Foundation and Building 180.
The plaza is directly on the downtown transit spine, so walking from Embarcadero BART/Muni is generally more straightforward than trying to park next to the event.
When is R-Evolution being removed?
The event organizer says R-Evolution will start to come down Monday, Oct. 12 and should be completely off site by Thursday, Oct. 15.
There is a small timing wrinkle in the city’s planning paperwork: the Recreation and Parks special-event master calendar lists an “R-EVOLUTION Removal” advisory for Oct. 13–15. Taken together, the official and organizer material points to a dismantling window beginning around Oct. 12–13 and finishing by Oct. 15.
If your goal is simply to see the sculpture before it leaves, do not wait until the removal week.
Why is the sculpture leaving now?
The current event announcement focuses on the end of the installation’s run rather than describing a permanent relocation plan. Big Art Loop says the work has been on display at Embarcadero Plaza since April 2025.

Do you need a ticket?
No paid ticket is listed. The farewell is free, and organizers describe it as open to all ages. An RSVP is encouraged so the organizers can plan for attendance.
What should you expect at the farewell?
This is not being presented as a formal museum-style closing ceremony. The announced program mixes discussion, music and dance: conversations on the sculpture’s creative journey, live music, performances, a meditation and a final DJ set.
Because the event runs for six hours, people do not necessarily need to arrive at 2 p.m. to see the sculpture. Anyone trying to catch a specific performance should check the organizer’s page again closer to Oct. 2 in case a more detailed run-of-show appears.
