SAN FRANCISCO — There are plenty of ways to spend a Saturday night in San Francisco. Listening to Moby-Dick being read continuously until Sunday lunchtime is one of the less conventional options.
The Moby-Dick 24-Hour Reading Marathon begins at noon Saturday, Sept. 12 and continues without stopping until noon Sunday, Sept. 13 inside the San Francisco Maritime Museum at 900 Beach Street.
Admission is free. And yes: people really can stay overnight.
Do you have to stay for all 24 hours?
No. The San Francisco Maritime National Park Association explicitly says attendees may come and go. You can stop in for a chapter, leave, and return later rather than committing to the entire novel.
The reading itself is continuous, so someone arriving at 3 a.m. will hear whatever chapter the group has reached by then.
Do you have to read aloud?
No. Volunteer readers sign up separately for chapters. Ordinary visitors can simply listen.
The organizer limits readers to one chapter each and asks scheduled readers to arrive at least 30 minutes before their approximate reading time. If a reader does not appear, organizers may recruit a replacement from the audience.
Can you sleep at the Maritime Museum?
Sort of. This is not a hotel-style overnight stay, but the organizer says there will be limited room for sleeping bags. It also warns that the museum’s chairs are not particularly suited to an all-night stay.
That makes the event unusually flexible: you can hear a few chapters on Saturday afternoon, return late at night, or bring a sleeping bag and attempt the full overnight experience.
What can you bring?
Light snacks are allowed, and the organizer says free coffee will be available. Extra copies of Moby-Dick will also be on hand, though visitors can bring their own.
Alcohol, drugs, weapons and vaping are prohibited. Only service animals are permitted. Costumes are encouraged.
Is the Moby-Dick marathon really free?
Yes. The marathon is listed as a free public event. There is a separate signup for people who want to read a chapter, but ordinary attendees do not have to volunteer as readers.
Where is the Maritime Museum?
The event is at the San Francisco Maritime Museum, 900 Beach Street, near Aquatic Park and Fisherman’s Wharf. Transit is generally easier than parking immediately around the waterfront, particularly on a busy Saturday.
Visitors planning to arrive late at night should check current transit service before leaving and remember that ordinary late-night frequencies are different from daytime service.
