SAN FRANCISCO — Litquake is bringing a free afternoon of readings, music and small-press browsing to Yerba Buena Gardens on Sunday, with more than two dozen literary organizations listed for the accompanying book fair.
Litquake Out Loud and the Small Press Book Fair both run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4. The outdoor event is free, and Litquake says registration is encouraged but not necessary.
When and where is Litquake Out Loud?
The event is Sunday, Oct. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Yerba Buena Gardens. Litquake lists the location as 750 Howard Street, with the Out Loud programming held outdoors at the gardens’ Esplanade/Great Lawn stage area.
The same five-hour window applies to the Small Press Book Fair, so visitors do not have to choose between two different dates or venues.
Is Litquake Out Loud free?
Yes. Litquake marks the event FREE. Its event page also says registration is encouraged but not necessary.
That makes this an easy drop-in event for people already downtown, although registering can still help the organizer estimate interest.
What happens at Out Loud?
Litquake says the Out Loud series puts its production resources in the hands of Bay Area BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers, who curate daytime outdoor programming. The Oct. 4 event also includes live music and the Small Press Book Fair.
Lead curation is by Giovanna Lomanto. As of Sept. 28, Litquake still lists additional event curators and music as TBA, so a detailed performance schedule should not be invented before the organizer posts one.

Has the full Litquake Out Loud program been announced?
Not yet. The date, hours, free admission, lead curator and book-fair participants are published, but Litquake’s current Out Loud page still marks the remaining event curators and music as TBA.

How do you get to Yerba Buena Gardens?
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival says Powell and Montgomery BART/Muni stations are both about two blocks away. The site also lists multiple Muni bus routes serving the surrounding blocks.

What should you bring?
The gardens are an outdoor venue with open lawn seating. Low lawn chairs and picnic blankets are welcome under the venue’s general visitor guidance, and visitors should dress for changing San Francisco weather.
Because the book fair involves browsing tables as well as listening to programming, a light setup is likely to be easier than carrying large gear around the lawn.
