SAN FRANCISCO — A free maritime festival will fill Aquatic Park on Sept. 19 with a boat parade across the cove, live performances, sea chanteys, small craft and activities for children.
The 2026 Festival of the Sea runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The organizer says the event is free and open to all.
There is one important 2026 wrinkle for anyone expecting the usual historic-ship experience: Hyde Street Pier is closed for reconstruction, and the park's historic ships have been moved temporarily to Mare Island. The festival is still happening in San Francisco around Aquatic Park and the Maritime Museum.
What is happening at Festival of the Sea?
The San Francisco Maritime National Park Association lists a broad waterfront program rather than a single stage show. Confirmed highlights include:
- a parade of boats across Aquatic Cove;
- historic and small craft exhibitions in the cove;
- outdoor live music and dance inspired by sea traditions;
- sea chantey performances inside the Maritime Museum;
- sandcastle building on the beach;
- a puppet show and story time for children; and
- local food trucks.

One older sentence embedded in a calendar listing has continued to show a Sept. 12 reference. The event's dedicated 2026 page and calendar date both say Sept. 19, which is the date SF News Today is using.
What time is the boat parade?
The organizer confirms a boat parade across Aquatic Cove, but as of Sept. 8 it has not posted a specific parade time on the 2026 event page.
If the boat parade is the main reason you are going, check the organizer's schedule again closer to Sept. 19 rather than assuming it begins when the festival opens at 11 a.m.
Where exactly is the festival?
The event listing uses San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, 900 Beach Street, the address of the Maritime Museum. Festival activity extends into the surrounding Aquatic Park waterfront and Aquatic Cove.
That is west of Fisherman's Wharf, around Beach and Hyde streets. The park's Visitor Center is at 499 Jefferson Street, while the Maritime Museum entrance is at 900 Beach Street.
Hyde Street Pier is closed — what does that change?
Normally, Hyde Street Pier and the park's historic ship collection are central attractions. In 2026, that is different.
The National Park Service says Hyde Street Pier is closed for the Hyde Street Rebuild Project. The ships have been moved to the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo and will return after the rebuild.
So do not arrive expecting normal walk-on access to the historic ships at Hyde Street Pier. Festival of the Sea is a separate free event centered on the San Francisco waterfront, the cove and the Maritime Museum area.
Should you drive?
The National Park Service says San Francisco Maritime has no dedicated visitor parking lot and that street parking is limited. Paid garages and lots exist around Fisherman's Wharf, but traffic and parking can be difficult.
For most visitors, public transit is the simpler option. NPS lists nearby Muni routes including the 19, 28 and 49, and the Powell-Hyde cable-car turnaround is at Hyde and Beach. The F-line streetcar is also within walking distance.
Is Festival of the Sea good for children?
The confirmed program includes story time, a puppet show and sandcastle building, so there is more for families than simply watching boats. The event is free, which also makes it easy to drop in for part of the day rather than commit to the full six hours.
What should you check before Sept. 19?
Two details are still worth watching: the final performance lineup and the exact timing of the boat parade. The organizer's 2026 Festival of the Sea page is the best primary source for those updates.
