SAN FRANCISCO — Union Square turns into a free outdoor Garba floor Saturday, with two hours of beginner-friendly Bollywood Garba instruction followed by a one-hour open dance party.
The Oct. 10 program is part of Union Square’s “Second Saturdays ’Round the World” series and is presented by Rang De Bollywood. The official park schedule says the event is open to all ages, skill levels and backgrounds.
What time is Bollywood Garba at Union Square?
The event runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. The official schedule splits the three-hour program into two clear blocks:
- 11 a.m.–1 p.m.: Bolly Garba dance lessons, with no experience required.
- 1–2 p.m.: an open dance party with Bollywood and Garba music.
Union Square’s program page says lessons will happen through the day and encourages both first-timers and experienced dancers to join.
Is the Union Square Garba free?
Yes. Both the Union Square program page and the organizer’s Eventbrite listing describe the event as free. The Eventbrite page also lists it as all ages.
An Eventbrite registration is available, but the Union Square page describes the program as free to attend and welcoming walk-ins. If you want event-day updates from the organizer, registering is the safer choice.
Do you need to know Garba before going?
No. The organizer specifically says beginners and people who have never done Garba are welcome. The lesson block is designed to teach the steps before the open dance party.
Garba is a circular group dance associated with Gujarat and the Navratri season. This Union Square version blends Garba rhythms with Bollywood music rather than presenting itself as a formal religious program.
What should you wear?
There is no dress requirement. The organizers invite people to wear bright or Indian-inspired clothing if they want, but also say attendees can come casual and comfortable.
What is the easiest way to get there?
Union Square is directly served by the T Third at Union Square/Market Street Station. SFMTA says that station connects by underground concourse to Powell Street Station.
Powell Street BART is also a practical option; BART describes the station as centrally located for Union Square. With Fleet Week adding traffic and parking pressure across the city this weekend, transit avoids having to search for a downtown parking space.
What should you know before leaving?
The Union Square schedule says programming is subject to change. If you are traveling specifically for a lesson rather than the dance party, check the official program page again Saturday morning.
