SAN FRANCISCO — If you have seen social posts saying Black Panther starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, the official schedule is a little more useful than that.
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival lists its free Black Panther movie night for Saturday, Sept. 5, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The pre-show begins at 6:30 p.m., while the movie itself is scheduled to start at sunset, around 7:30 p.m.
The screening takes place on the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens, between Third and Fourth streets along Mission Street.
Is the Black Panther screening free?
Yes. Yerba Buena Gardens Festival lists the event as free and offers a free RSVP. The film is rated PG-13.
What happens before the movie?
Arriving at 7:30 would get you there around the projected movie start, but it would miss the pre-show.
The festival says the 6:30 program includes music by KALW DJ Eryka, a performance by KaiKai Bee Michaels, activities and popcorn before the screening. That makes 6:30 the better target for anyone treating the evening as an event rather than simply arriving for the opening credits.
Should you bring chairs?
The organizer encourages blankets and low-lawn chairs. The screening uses open lawn seating, so arriving earlier also improves your odds of getting a comfortable spot.
Bring another layer too. A pleasant downtown afternoon does not guarantee the Great Lawn will feel warm after sunset.
Getting there without a car
Yerba Buena Gardens sits between the Montgomery and Powell BART areas and is served by several Muni routes. The festival itself highlights its proximity to both BART stations.
For an outdoor event in the middle of downtown, transit also removes the need to time your arrival around finding a garage before the 6:30 pre-show.
What if you arrive late?
The movie time is approximately 7:30 because it is tied to sunset rather than a theater projection schedule.
Treat 7:30 as a planning target, not permission to arrive at 7:29 expecting assigned seating and trailers. If you want a comfortable lawn spot, the official 6:30 pre-show is the safer arrival point.
