SAN FRANCISCO — Yerba Buena Gardens Festival closes out its October music programming Saturday with a free performance that blends jazz, African American roots and Filipino musical traditions.
The Afro-Filipino Jazz Project is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, on the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens, on Mission Street between Third and Fourth streets.
Is the Oct. 24 Afro-Filipino Jazz Project show free?
Yes. Yerba Buena Gardens Festival lists the performance as free and offers a free RSVP. The Festival’s programs are outdoors, and its site describes the season as family-friendly and ADA accessible.
Who is performing?
The project is led by San Francisco flutist, percussionist and arranger John Calloway, a longtime figure in the Bay Area Latin-jazz scene. Yerba Buena Gardens Festival says the group was founded in 2022 as a space for Afro Filipinx, African American and Filipino American musicians to work across jazz, African American roots and traditional and folkloric Filipino music.
That makes the show more than a standard park concert: it is a locally rooted collaboration built around cultural exchange and a repertoire that crosses several Bay Area musical communities.
Where exactly is the performance?
The venue is the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission Street between Third and Fourth streets. The performance starts at 2 p.m.; arriving early gives visitors more room to choose a spot before the set begins.
The Gardens are in the downtown transit core. Visitors who do not need to drive may find BART and Muni easier than searching for weekend parking around Yerba Buena and Moscone Center.
Do you need an RSVP?
The organizer provides a free RSVP link, but the event page presents the program as an admission-free public performance. Check the official event page before leaving in case weather or production needs change the schedule.
