SAN FRANCISCO — Caltrans has scheduled the fourth and final full weekend closure of the US-101 Hospital Curve rehabilitation project for Nov. 6–9, giving drivers more than two weeks to plan around a southbound shutdown through one of San Francisco’s main freeway approaches.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 and end at 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, weather permitting. Caltrans’ current project page says the remaining southbound Hospital Curve lanes between Cesar Chavez and 17th Street will close and directs motorists to use southbound I-280 as the alternate route.
Exactly when will southbound US-101 close?
The planned window is Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 9 at 6 a.m. Caltrans says this is the final weekend closure needed to finish repaving the remaining southbound lanes.
Will northbound US-101 remain open?
Caltrans’ main project page now says all northbound lanes will remain open for public travel during the Nov. 6–9 closure. An earlier advisory described one northbound lane closing with two remaining open, so drivers should rely on the newest Caltrans project page and check again shortly before the weekend in case the traffic-control plan changes.
What detour does Caltrans recommend?
For through southbound traffic, Caltrans says to avoid southbound 101 at Hospital Curve because of expected delays and use southbound I-280 instead. The shutdown affects travel from central and eastern San Francisco toward SFO, the Peninsula and the South Bay, so I-280 and local approaches may carry heavier traffic than usual.
Why is there another closure after the October work?
Crews reopened the Oct. 16–19 work after repaving two southbound fast lanes. The Nov. 6–9 closure is intended to complete the remaining southbound lanes. Caltrans says the rehabilitation is designed to preserve the freeway corridor for an estimated 40-year life span and improve ride quality and safety.
Was the November closure previously scheduled for October?
Yes. Caltrans says this closure was rescheduled from Oct. 2–5. That makes the Nov. 6 date especially worth checking: older calendars or saved plans may still reflect the superseded October weekend.
What should SFO and Peninsula travelers do?
If your normal trip uses southbound US-101 through Hospital Curve, plan a different route before entering the closure area. For airport trips or other fixed appointments, leave extra time and check Caltrans QuickMap shortly before departure. The construction schedule is weather dependent.
