HALF MOON BAY — Mavericks’ famous winter waves are getting an opening-day celebration Saturday, but visitors should understand what they are going to see.

The Mavericks Surf Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pillar Point Harbor. Admission is free.

Organizers are promoting music, food and drinks, appearances by big-wave surfers, a traditional surf swap and ocean-awareness and safety programming as the Coastside marks the start of Mavericks’ big-wave season.

Is Mavericks Surf Festival free?

Yes. The published event listing describes the Oct. 10 festival as a free event, making it an easy day-trip option from San Francisco and elsewhere in the Bay Area.

Will there be a Mavericks surf competition Saturday?

No scheduled big-wave contest is advertised for Saturday.

The event is a festival celebrating the opening of big-wave season. Mavericks surfing depends on ocean conditions capable of producing the enormous waves for which the break is famous; a calendar date alone cannot create contest conditions.

Saturday’s advertised program instead centers on the surf community: big-wave surfers, music, gear, safety and the surf swap.

Where is the festival?

The event is at Pillar Point Harbor, 1 Johnson Pier in Half Moon Bay.

The harbor provides public parking, but organizers have not published a special 2026 event parking guarantee. With a free Saturday festival and normal Coastside weekend traffic, arriving earlier rather than just before the busiest afternoon period is the safer plan.

What time does Mavericks Surf Festival start?

The current event-specific publicity gives an 11 a.m.–5 p.m. window. One San Mateo County Harbor District calendar tile displayed noon when SF News Today checked it, so visitors making a time-sensitive trip should recheck the organizer’s day-of listing.

What should visitors expect?

The event sits somewhere between a surf-season kickoff, community festival and ocean-safety gathering.

For people who follow Mavericks closely, the appeal is seeing the big-wave community as the winter season begins. For families and casual visitors, the free admission and Pillar Point Harbor setting make it accessible even without knowing much about competitive surfing.

And unlike an actual Mavericks contest, Saturday comes with the rare luxury of knowing the date in advance.
